Travel Packing – Listing Process

If you search for travel-related posts on my blog, you will find Travel packing for various occasions or places.

Traveling light for me is important to maintain sanity.

As I always say, planning is the key. If you don’t plan well, you are bound to pack everything from your wardrobe with the thought that “what if I need it”. And I am not talking about planning just before you are packing your bag. If its a small trip, closer to home, than planning right before packing bag is all right. However when you are traveling for a longer period, it necessary to plan at least one month in advance. This will give you enough time to check the missing pieces and whether you want to buy them or borrow them.

As I have mentioned above, the below pointers are for you to start thinking at least 30 days in advance of packing.

  1. Start with making a list of Bags and shoes. I know it sounds silly, but more often than not, bags and shoes take most of the space in a women’s travel packing. This 16-day trip is work and leisure, so I need two different set of clothes, bags, and shoes. Hence being mindful of bags and shoes that can double up for all kind of days is useful.

  1. Next is check weather. This is part of planning because it will majorly decide your packing items. If you are in hot & cold weather than you know exactly what you will carry. But if you have read “Travel Packing – 15 days to Japan in October”, you know that changing weather seasons are the hardest to pack.

  1. Now start writing down the actual clothes you want to take. I always suggest seperates when traveling to multiple locations. Dresses & jumpsuits are great but don’t fill your whole bag with them, they are restrictive and you won’t be able to create multiple outfits with them.

The above three-pointers will give you a clarity of things and if at all you need to buy anything.

The next step is 5-6 days before the travel.

  1. Take your rough list and note down each item that you will wear day/date wise. This will give you clarity of the activity of the day and take away the pain of deciding during travel as well.

  1. Once the list is ready, start getting all things out from your wardrobe. If something needs to be washed/ironed, you have the time to do it. id something needs to repair, you have the time to swap the item with another piece.

  1. Now is the packing time. Read my post on “Packing Cubes”. It has made travel packing so easy. You can use the cubes to sort items wise / day wise.

Hope the listing process is helpful and you start to pack light but smartly for all your travels.
