A hourglass body shape can be small, medium or large body frame, depending on their built and other body variations. With a weight loss or gain hourglass body shape have tendencies to form another body shape.

  • If you have tendency to gain weight on the upper body than you can become an Inverted Triangular Body Shape.
  • If you have tendencies to gain weight on the lower body than you can become a Triangular Body Shape.

My two rules on Hourglass Body Shape

  • Highlight the curvier upper body and lower body
  • Create an illusion of an average waist curve.

Tops for Hourglass Body Shape

  • Choose tops accentuate the shoulders and bust and at the same time takes the attention away from narrow waist. Peplum Tops, belted tops, tops with pre defined waist line works very well.
  • Hosiery / Stretchy materials will hug your curves so if you are okay with that then opt for those fabrics. if you are a plus size hourglass, then better to avoid this fabric.Also, avoid stiff fabrics, it will end up looking boxy. Soft fabrics like knit, soft cotton, silk and blend will gently drape over the body.
  • Fuller hourglasses / Plus size hourglass tend to look top heavy if the necklines are not kept in check. Opt for round, v necks. Avoid boat neck or fully covered necklines.
  • Avoid design details that add volume to your bust or hips.

  • Hosiery / Stretchy materials will hug your curves so if you are okay with that then opt for those fabrics. if you are a plus size hourglass, then better to avoid this fabric.

  • If you don’t like belted jackets, then opt for jackets that just end above your hips. This will accentuate the curves in a flattering way.

  • This body type can wear high waisted pants, narrow fit not skinny pants, belted pants to give an illusion of a defined waist line and not a narrow waistline.

Skirts for Hourglass Body Shape

  • Invest in skirts that are adjustable at the waist, pencil skirts but not clingy fabrics. A line skirts also work but avoid very fuller skirts, this will add to the body volume. Best length is knee length.

  • Invest in swimwear tat have predefined waistline, so as to take away attention from natural small waist.
  • Wear swimwear with interesting cuts and styles to highlight the balanced upper and lower body.
